Profile of Airedale NHS Trust Speech and Language Therapy

Airedale NHS Trust comprises a major District General Hospital providing a comprehensive range of acute, mental health and community services.   In addition a number of smaller community hospitals throughout the District provide varying rehabilitative, out-patient and therapy services.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service offers an integrated service delivery encompassing hospital based clinics, health centres, main stream and special schools and domiciliary visiting.

The Trust's catchment area encompasses the Craven District of North Yorkshire to the North and on its Southern flank includes Keighley, Bingley and Ilkley areas of the Bradford Metropolitan Council. Its population is approximately 206,000.

The aim of the Trust is to provide an effective health care service in a way that is responsive to the needs of the users of the services. This principle can be applied to the aims of the Speech and Language Therapy service. The "Patient's Charter" provides guidelines for good practice.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service has a complement of nineteen therapists, three bi-lingual Speech & Language Therapy Support Workers and our two Secretaries. Clinical Specialist posts include:-

  • acquired neurology
  • psychiatry of old age
  • non-fluency 
  • adults / children with learning disabilities
  • children with special needs in main stream education.
  • bi-lingual services
  • ASD

Here at Airedale we do offer observation sessions which usually consist of half a day with a member of the adult team and half a day with a member of the paediatric team. These sessions are mainly offered to students who have already or areabout to apply to University to study Speech and Language Therapy.

The Speech and Language Therapy Department also offer practise-based learning placements to students on a University Speech and Language Therapy course.  These are negotiated directly with the University.
