Work Experience

The purpose of a work experience placement is to help individuals decide on career options.  Work experience is not reserved for young people.  We invite applications from anyone wishing to explore alternative career options.

The area and programme of work experience will be determined in relation to the likely career pathway of the student and will take into account, age, academic record, interests and chosen academic pathway.

Which programme to apply for?

Separate programmes are run for medical and non-medical work experience with different application forms and application processes. Please read carefully the information below related to the programme you are interested in.
Medical work experience is only available for students over 16 years old and a minimum age restriction of 17 is applied to Accident and Emergency, Theatres and the Children’s and Maternity Units. Placements are not offered in the Mortuary.

Medical Work Experience

The medical work experience programme will include talks by medical staff (on medical degrees, UCAS application skills and careers in medicine), a medical library skills session and a clinical skills session
(using manikins and simulated scenarios).  The remaining time will be made up of rotations around different departments each morning and afternoon, giving a broad experience of medical specialities.

The programme will run as four week-long sessions during the summer months with successful applicants being allocated a place for one these sessions. The fourth session is only available to post-School/College applicants. The number of places on the programme are limited and applicants will be allocated places according to academic performance and statements submitted under section D of the application form.

All applicants need to be at least 16 years old at the time of the programme starting and live within the catchment area of the Foundation Trust – see map here. School/College applicants are expected to have confirmed results of 6 A’s at GCSE including in English, Mathematics and Science. Post-School/College applicants are expected to have confirmed results of either AAB at A-Level or a good 2:1 degree depending on the stage of their academic study.

Applications will only be accepted between 27 February and 30 March for this years programme. Applications for future years and any sent at any other time can not be considered and will be disposed of.
We will only contact successful applicants so if you haven’t heard from us by 13 April please assume that
you haven’t obtained a place.

Medical application form

Medical work experience applications should be submitted via email to; amanda.robson@anhst.nhs.uk
Paper applications will not be accepted.

Non-medical Work Experience

Placements for non-medical work experience are offered all year round excluding the months of June and July.  We are however not always able to place all students that apply due to there being a higher demand for places than we can accommodate.  During this time no applications will be added to a waiting list.  Placements for the month of August should be applied for before the June closing date.  Peak times in the year for placements are August and school holidays.  We encourage individuals to apply for placements giving us as much notice as possible (minimum of 6 weeks is required) and to be as flexible as possible with their placement dates. In order to increase your chance of being offered a place, please request your dates carefully.

All students who wish to be placed must complete the Non-Medical Work Experience Application Form (available below or via the Training & Development Department on 01535 294374).
