12 September 2016 – Bereavement support group for families launches in Keighley
A new bereavement support group for families who have lost babies through stillbirth, miscarriage or neonatal death is being launched this month.
The Sunbeam Support Group has been set up by Airedale midwife Bev Beaumont and Family Support Worker Jacqui Hainsworth, following their concerns that there was limited support for local families, and feedback from bereaved families that they didn’t know where to find help.
“We are offering this support group to anyone in the Airedale and Wharfedale area who has experienced the death of a baby, stillbirth or miscarriage” explains Bev Beaumont. “It is a particularly cruel bereavement to be preparing to welcome a new member of the family, to then be faced with the loss of your baby. We offer a bereavement service on the labour ward at the hospital, but there was little long-term support locally. We’ve worked with bereaved parents to set up the support group so that there is a place to go where people understand what you’re going through. We also work closely with SANDs, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity in Bradford, and Aidan’s Elephants, a baby bereavement charity.”
The group is being launched on Saturday 17 September between 1 and 4pm at Strong Close Nursery School on Airedale Road in Keighley and anyone is welcome to go along to find out more about the group. Following the launch the group will meet on the last Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the school. For details, contact Jacqui on 01535 605272 or 07484 056363.
A Facebook group has also been set up to support parents going through this most devastating of experiences. The group can be found at https://www.facebook.com/sunbeamsupportkeighley/
“We welcome anyone who has lost a baby, whether it was recently or years ago” says Bev. “Please come along and find out how we can support you.”
