Mary Armitage has just taken up a post at the helm of the maternity unit at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust.

The new head of midwifery and senior matron has held a range of positions in maternity services spanning almost three decades. Previously she was deputy head of midwifery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

The majority of her clinical experience has been in the community setting, whereas much of her management experience has been in secondary care.

Mary said: “I am delighted to be taking up my new post in a successful service with considerable potential.

“With the ever changing landscape of the NHS, I hope to steer the service on a steady path building on the firm foundations and good reputation that are already evident.”

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s maternity service cares for around 2,500 women and their families every year and covers a large area across West and North Yorkshire and East Lancashire.

Its midwifery led unit was recently refurbished and upgraded to provide a less clinical and relaxing environment for women. There are four birthing suites, all with private patio areas and en-suite wet room facilities, offering more dignity and privacy for women. All the rooms are also equipped with the latest state-of-the-art birthing equipment and two of the birthing suites have large pools for water births or support during labour.

The new unit also includes a self contained bereavement suite where families can be treated with upmost privacy and dignity at a time when they are most vulnerable.

Personal one-on-one care throughout pregnancy is a high priority for the maternity service at Airedale. For some women having one midwife they can get to know and trust can make a huge difference to how they cope with their pregnancy, labour and the birth of their baby. The My Airedale Midwife (MAM) project launched just over a year ago has been very well evaluated and the midwifery team plan to take this forward working with the wider maternity team.

A new Stork Walk video is now available online at http://www.airedale-trust.nhs.uk/services/maternity-services to provide mums-to-be with all the information they need to make the decision about where to give birth. The tour shows the various departments within maternity including, labour ward, the midwifery led unit, neonatal unit, antenatal clinic and the maternity assessment centre and aims to answer any questions expectant parents may have.
