28th January 2015 – First birthday raises money for hospital
A family, from Guiseley, have celebrated their daughters first birthday by raising over £1,000 for the neonatal unit that cared for her when she was born prematurely.
Clare and Dave Wright organised the event for their daughter, Katelyn Wright, to formally welcome her into the family and celebrate her first birthday, as well as raising money for Airedale Hospital’s neonatal unit.
Clare said “I was taken ill seven months into my pregnancy and as a result Kate had to be delivered prematurely by caesarean section. She was cared for in the neonatal unit at Airedale Hospital for around a month, including five days in intensive care.
“The team that looked after her, and us, through a scary, emotional and challenging time, were wonderful. Kate is now thriving and we wanted to do something special to say thank you.”
Guests were asked to make a donation to the unit, rather than buying a birthday present for Kate. The family also organised fundraising games on the day, including a tombola, pluck a duck, a bouncy castle, a soft play area, candy floss, popcorn, a photo booth, face painting and a raffle – raising £1,294.98 for the neonatal unit.
Jo Newman, matron for children’s services at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust said “We are so grateful for the Wright’s generous donation, it’s great to hear the family and guests had such a good day.
“The donation will help us to buy a portable phototherapy lamp which treats babies with jaundice. This lets babies stay closer to their mum on the ward.”
