A 2019 analysis of 175 NHS hospital switchboards and their efficiency has found that the team at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust have performed extremely well and have placed 11th in the whole country.

The project looked at identifying avoidable delays in contacting bleep operators as well as overall efficiency. This outcome is great for the patient experience as a swift and easy pass over enables patients to get the care and information they need, when they need it. Switchboard operators don’t only assist patients and visitors but also staff too and are a crucial team to any hospital. Despite period of high call volumes, switchboard staff remain calm despite pressure. Airedale’s team have demonstrated just this.

The team are very proud of their achievement, with a team of only ten people. “A good Switchboard needs teamwork, communication skills and the ability to remain calm” said Helen Watkinson, Switchboard Supervisor. “As a team that works behind the scenes, it’s really nice to be recognised”.

David Moss, Director of AGH Solutions said: “I am really proud of how the switchboard team performed in the National Switchboard Audit, coming 11th out of 175 acute Trusts. Switchboard is an essential area when dealing with crash calls and emergencies, so being one of the most efficient in the country is very reassuring. Well done to all the team!”
