The winning entries in the Airedale Hospital art competition were announced last week, topping off a week of special celebrations for the NHS 70th birthday.
Children across the local area were invited to get creative and design artwork to celebrate the birthday and show their vision for the NHS in the future.
Over 150 entries were received, with many local schools keen to take part including Steeton Primary School, Settle College and Wycliffe CE Primary School, Shipley.
Judges at Airedale Hospital had the difficult job of shortlisting the fantastic standard of entries which were then displayed at the Trust’s birthday celebration event on 5 July. Staff were then invited to vote for their favourite entry in each of the three age categories.
Lynsey Nicholson, Patient Experience Officer and member of the judging panel said “We wanted to involve younger members of our local community in the NHS 70 celebrations to get them thinking what the NHS means to them and to celebrate this wonderful institution. I’ve been blown away by the creative and colourful pieces of art we’ve been sent! I am really pleased to announce our winners and I’d like to say a big thank you to all the children and young people who took part.”
10 year old Ronnie Hearnshaw from Oakworth was the joint winner in the age 8-10 category. He says: “I was super excited when I found out I had won a prize in the NHS 70 competition. The hospital is really important to me and I am glad I can be a part of it. Thank you for my amazing prize!”
The winner in the age 4-7 category was 5 year old Alfie Danvers, the joint winners in the age 8-10 category along with Ronnie were Amelia Hussain and Ruqayyah Khulthum, both aged 10, and the winners in the 11+ category were 12 year old Surobi Mohammed and 13 year old Amy-Jane Hodgson.
The winning artwork will now go on display across the hospital and be made into canvas prints for the tunnel which connects the main road bus stop to the hospital.
