Nearly all patients who need to be admitted to hospital after coming through the emergency department will come to the acute assessment unit (AAU). The AAU cares for patients who require an urgent medical assessment and short stay. On AAU the team will create an initial management plan for you, and then you’ll either be admitted to a ward or discharged.
Our AAU includes our ambulatory care unit (ACU), which offers same day care to patients at the hospital. This means that you can be assessed, diagnosed, treated and often go home the same day without being admitted into hospital overnight.
Our AAU and ACU are in a new building which opened in 2018 that joins on to our emergency department to bring together our urgent care services. It means that we can provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time in line with the same day emergency care model.
