“To help everyone achieve their potential for optimum health and well-being through eating a healthy and nutritious diet.”

Good nutrition is fundamental to health and central to the management of disease. Our aim as dietitians is to help everyone achieve their potential for optimum health and well-being.

Dietitians are able to assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems for individuals and for the public. We use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease, and translate this into practical information about food to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. We treat a range of medical conditions with dietary therapy, specially tailored to each individual and we advise on healthy eating for all ages, races, cultures and social groups.

Dietitians take a holistic approach and involve the patient directly in their own care. We aim to increase patients’ understanding of their condition and how their diet can make a difference to their immediate and long term health. Raising awareness, empowering and supporting patients to make dietary changes that will benefit their health and fit into their lifestyles is our ultimate goal. In most areas, we work as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Dietitians treat people of all ages and in all settings including the hospital, outpatients clinics, GP surgeries, health centres, schools and community centres.
