Hospital 2.0 – a blueprint for future hospitals

Hospital 2.0 is the name for the government’s national approach to delivering all new NHS hospital being built in England, including Airedale General Hospital.

These are a number of principles that underpin Hospital 2.0 design guidelines:

  • Transformational patient care
Driving transformation to provide excellent, safe and digitally enabled experience for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Hospitals for now and the future
Hospitals that are adaptable and resilient to change, that transform national standards and leave a sustainable legacy.
  • Optimised healthcare structure
The right estates, the right layout enabling people to be in the right place, supported by intelligent digital systems.
  • Built efficiently; operated and maintained to last
Using innovation and technology to leverage scale and drive efficiency and value for money. This will ensure maximum durability for the future.

How the template was developed
The New Hospital Programme developed Hospital 2.0 involving more than 1,000 clinicians, including from Royal Colleges, patients and the public and many other stakeholders through workshops and events.
How the hospital will be built
It will be built using modern methods of construction (MMC). The majority of the different modular units are built off-site in factory-controlled conditions, before being transported to the hospital site. This speeds up the construction phase, and has other benefits such as greater predictability, quality, sustainability, cost-effectiveness and safety.
Some of the design principles
There are standard templates for wards, theatres and treatment rooms and recommended layout for services, setting out which services should be close together. The idea behind reducing the variation in building design is that it improves efficiency and supports better care, as it helps colleagues work seamlessly across the whole site. As part of the New Hospital Programme, all new hospitals will be built using the 100% single en-suite bedroom model. This is a national direction of travel to enhance patient experience, privacy and dignity, and to improve infection control. It will be supported by good visibility for staff, and the latest digital systems and technology for monitoring, such as fall detection systems. There will also be social areas for patients to avoid isolation.

New technology and new ways of working
It will be a ‘smart’ hospital, making the best use of the latest digital technology. Examples include:

  • For patients – the ability to manage appointments online; access information about their health care and tools to support recovery and monitor progress remotely.
  • For staff – the latest medical equipment and handheld technologies and digitisation of all patient medical records.
  • Smart building management systems – to manage lighting, temperature, and air quality and monitor and maintain equipment and facilities.
