What we’ve heard so far about designing our new Airedale Hospital

We are committed to involving patients, staff, carers, and our wider community in shaping the new Airedale Hospital. We started this process with two initial workshops to get a feel for the things people want to focus on and below is a  report on the feedback from these events.

The key themes from the workshops were:

  • Navigation and accessibility matter most, people want clear signage, easy-to-use maps, and support for mobility, cognitive, and neurodiverse needs.
  • A welcoming first impression is essential, from entrances and waiting areas to the role of volunteers and information points.
  • Patient comfort and privacy are priorities, especially single rooms, quiet spaces, and sensory-friendly design.
  • The hospital should feel part of its community, with green outdoor areas, rest spaces for staff and carers, and a culture that feels local and supportive.
  • Everyday life makes a big difference, food choice, cultural and religious dietary needs, and activities for longer stays are highly valued.

Shaping the future of care in the hospital and in communities

In September last year we held a series of informal discussions with the previous patients to help shape our Target Operating Model, which is the way we will provide services to our communities in the future. These sessions focused on receiving feedback about what they think works well at the hospital, what could be improved and what services could be provided in communities. The sessions were held in Skipton Town Hall and Keighley Healthy Living Centre.

You can read the feedback we received in the report below.

New hospital design survey

Thank you to everyone who took part in our design survey to share your views about how we can create the best possible hospital for our patients and local communities, including important things like making the hospital welcoming and easy to use, improving how you find your way around (wayfinding), digital technology and the facilities the hospital should have.

You can read the feedback from the survey and workshops below.

Next steps

  • We will continue to work with patients, staff, and local groups as we develop the detailed design of the hospital.
  • Future engagement will focus on areas where your input can shape decisions such as room layouts, digital access, and community spaces.
  • We will provide regular updates on how feedback is influencing the project.
