baby in a cot being cared for

On Tuesday 15 September 2026 the final report of the Thirlwall Inquiry was published. The Inquiry was established following the convictions of former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby. It considered what happened at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, listened to the experiences of the families affected, and looked at what the NHS must learn.

Our thoughts are first and foremost with the babies and families at the heart of these terrible events. We recognise the report and the news coverage surrounding it may feel deeply upsetting or frightening, particularly if your baby is receiving neonatal care now or has done so in the past.

We know that having a baby in neonatal care can be an overwhelming and uncertain time. You know your baby best, and you are an essential part of their care. Our commitment is to care for your baby safely and compassionately, keep you informed, involve you in decisions, and take every question or concern seriously.

You may have questions or simply want to talk about how you are feeling. If you would like to talk about anything raised by the report, ask about your baby’s care, or share a concern about our services, please speak to our neonatal team or contact Sarah Simpson, Director of Midwifery email: sarah.simpson42@nhs.net, or our patient advice and liaison service (PALS) via the feedback form on our website or by telephoning PALS on 01535 294019 or email anhsft.patientadvice@nhs.net.

We are here to listen and support you.

If you would feel more comfortable speaking to someone outside the trust, independent support is available and you can contact Bliss via their website www.bliss.org.uk.

Our Local Maternity Neonatal Voices Partnership Leads are also available to speak with service users and are available to contact by email.  For more information visit www.engagebdc.com/mvp.
