Professional Background

Mr Acornley’s medical degree was obtained from Birmingham University in 1996. He undertook his Specialist Orthopaedic training in the North East England Higher Specialist Training rotation, which included Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Durham. During his final year prior to his substantive Consultant appointment he completed an Advanced Lower Limb  Arthroplasty Fellowship Training as The Cavendish Hip Fellow for the Internationally renowned Lower Limb Arthroplasty Unit in Sheffield. The unit performs primary hip and knee arthroplasty as well as complex single and two stage revision surgery and reconstruction following infection, which accounts for just over half the case load. This experience enabled him to become an expert in Revision (redo) and both complex and routine Lower Limb Arthroplasty (Joint replacement) of the Hip and Knee.

Mr Acornley is based in the NHS at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust where he was appointed in November 2009 as the Lead Specialist Hip and Knee arthroplasty surgeon, with an interest in complex revision surgery often involving the treatment of infection and massive bone loss. He performs all aspects of hip arthroplasty including the use of ceramic bearings in the young patient group. In revision hip surgery he utilises a variety of surgical techniques such as extended trochanteric osteotomies and trochanteric slides for exposure. He is fully experienced in major pelvic revision techniques such as using mesh and reinforcement rings along with impaction bone grafting for cemented sockets. He also uses uncemented sockets and bulk allograft when appropriate. He uses a variety of cemented and uncemented implants to deal with the different aspects of femoral bone loss including proximal and total femoral endoprosthetic replacement surgery. He also performs total hip replacement for fracture neck of femur patients in the appropriate physiological groups.

Mr Acornley performs condylar primary knee arthroplasty with single radius technology and utilise condylar and hinged knee replacements in revision surgery along with hinged knees for complex and fixed deformity knee arthritis. He embedded the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP) at Airedale when he was appointed which significantly reduced length of stay.
