Fighting With Pride (FWP) is a new military charity, created on the 20th anniversary of the complete lifting of the ban on LGBT+ service – the ‘gay ban’.

They are here to support LGBT+ Veterans, serving personnel and their families, particularly those who were affected by the ‘gay ban’, ultimately lifted on 12th January 2000. Before then, thousands of LGBT+ service personnel were removed or forced from service and abandoned, after serving with pride. In the years ahead it is their aim to restore the military covenant and bring this community back into the military family.

They are working with Veteran supporting organisations to build capacity for LGBT+ Veteran support, to recognise their service and help resolve the challenges they face in their lives beyond military service.

FWP is a ‘lived experience’ LGBT+ charity, supporting those seeking help and a resource for those who seek to help them.

Op Nova logo

Op NOVA | Forces Employment Charity

Op NOVA provides support for veterans who are in contact with the justice system, enabling them to access the services they need.

The shift into non-military life can bring challenges that can lead to veterans feeling detached and in between military and civilian worlds. The reality for many is that this can potentially lead to housing problems, debt, health issues, PTSD, or drug and alcohol misuse. Which can in turn lead to some veterans being at risk of offending.

Op NOVA’s specialist team is drawn from those who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as partners, children and parents of those who serve or have served. Other members of the team have worked in the police, probation, prisons or charity sector. Our team is trained in Information Advice and Guidance, Level 4, and Mental Health First Aid.

We are able to identify and engage with veterans because we understand their unique circumstances.

Op NOVA may be contacted on:

Freephone 0800 917 7299

or by email at opnova@forcesemployment.org.uk

Fighting with pride. OpSterling. Connecting LGBT+ veterans with experts at Age UK.

Working in partnership with Fighting With Pride, Age UK is delivering the Operation Sterling programme to help older LGBT+ veterans, service personnel and their families.

The Operation Sterling programme provides telephone-based support, advice and casework to older LGBT+ veterans through Age UK’s Advice Line. The existing expertise of Age UK’s Advice Line advisors and the knowledge that Fighting With Pride has about how best to support the well-being of LGBT+ veterans means that Operation Sterling can support older LGBT+ veterans in many different ways.

There’s a focus on helping older LGBT+ veterans access financial support – from working out what support they might be eligible for to help them get started on the claims process. But Age UK’s advisors can also provide further support, like advising older LGBT+ veterans on housing options and social care.

If you are an LGBT+ Veteran and would like to access the specialised support offered through Age UK-Op Sterling don’t hesitate to get in touch with FWP through the Op Sterling contact form and one of their support team will make contact with you and start the referral process for you.
