Shaun Slater
Macmillan Personalised Care Cancer Lead Nurse
Job role
As a personalised care cancer lead nurse it is my role to work closely with our clinical nurse specialist teams to provide the most effective and timely personalised care and support to people living with and beyond cancer. I am responsible for leading, developing and delivering on a number of projects to improve the health, wellbeing and support outcomes for our patients, families, carers and community, by embedding and bringing personalised practical, emotional and social support closer to home.
I work very closely with our lead cancer team, clinical nurse specialist teams and the West Yorkshire & Harrogate Cancer Alliance to ensure we are meeting the holistic needs of patients and families living with and beyond cancer.
Area of responsibility
The personalised care agenda is my primary area of responisbility; focusing on ‘what matters to you’ rather than ‘what’s the matter with you’. Within both the personalised care and Living With and Beyond Cancer (LWBC) agenda, there are a number of personalised care interventions that I support with, which include:
- Personalised care and support plan based on an Holictic Needs Assessment (HNA)
- End of Treatment Summary
- Health and Wellbeing Information and Support (HWBIS)
- Cancer Care Review
- Personalised Startified Follow Up and Supported Self-Management (PSFU/SSM)

Professional background
I have over 13 years of nursing experience working in a variety of acute clinical and non-clinical settings caring for patients with cancer and other long term conditions, including cardiology, respiratory, endocrinology, haematology and cancer services.
I have had a number of different roles throughout my career, including staff nurse, charge nurse, clinical nurse specialist and senior cancer services nurse, before being appointed as personalised care cancer lead nurse at Airedale.
It is a priority for me and the teams I work alongside that every patient is supported, and optimal care outcomes always achieved. Throughout my practice, patient feedback, clinical audit and collaborative working are and continue to be crucial aspects of service improvement and improving patient and family experience. I am very proud to work at Airedale General Hospital alongside such dedicated and caring teams.
