What is the Active Together Airedale service?

Active Together Airedale is a new cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation service that is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research. Active Together has already been running in other parts of Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Wakefield. We aim to optimise the physical, nutritional, and emotional wellbeing needs of our newly diagnosed cancer patients’ before, during, and after their cancer treatment.  Research has shown that regular exercise before, during and after cancer treatment can lead to improved recovery, increased survival and help reduce the risk of cancer coming back.

Currently we are accepting referrals for patients with newly diagnosed colorectal (bowel) cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, or kidney cancer, who are being treated with curative intent. Referrals are received from the relevant Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team.

The service consists of three components: physical activity, nutritional advice and mental health and wellbeing support.

Patients can be seen at any point in their treatment journey, but ideally straight after diagnosis.

  • Patients are brought into clinic and assessed for their individual needs for physical activity, nutrition and emotional wellbeing. Depending on a patient’s needs they will be offered universal, targeted, or specialist interventions for each of the three components.
  • A personalised plan will be given to each patient. Based on their needs they will be invited to take part in group exercise classes, workshops, have a one-to-one appointment with a physiotherapist, dietitian or psychologist, or be given online or printed out resources.
  • During a patient’s cancer treatment, the Active Together team will stay in touch and offer further support based on a patient’s tolerance to treatment.
  • After a patient has completed their cancer treatment, they are brought back to clinic to assess their current needs. The aim is to understand how to best support a patient’s physical, nutritional and wellbeing needs.

After the rehabilitation phase, the team will help patients independently manage their physical, nutritional, and emotional wellbeing in the future, by signposting them to continued support and resources.
