Colposcopy
Welcome
The colposcopy department examines women who are referred from the cytology department with abnormal cervical samples as well as women referred by their GPs with signs and symptoms of abnormal vaginal bleeding or of pre-cancerous changes to their cervix.
You should not be alarmed if your cervical sample is abnormal (this happens in about 10% of all samples), these abnormalities act as an early warning sign that cancer might occur in the future if the abnormality is not treated.
We also provide treatments, under local anaesthetic to remove the abnormal area from the cervix. On some occasions, the abnormality may return to normal without any intervention but it is very important that you have the follow up (in the colposcopy clinic or GP surgery) until this happens.
