Welcome to the Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Team at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust.

We are a small team of specialist physiotherapists who work with pregnancy, postnatal, pelvic pain, bladder and bowel continence symptoms and pelvic floor dysfunction and who have the right skills, specific knowledge, and training to assess and treat a range of conditions in the most appropriate way.

All our physiotherapists are qualified and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (https://www.hcpc-uk.org/registration/).

Referrals:

Referrals are from GP, Consultant or Midwife and postnatal women can self-refer up to 6 months postnatal.

Location A10

This education class will take place in the Physiotherapy Department at Airedale Hospital in the Physiotherapy Department (location A10). This will take place on the date and time of your invite SMS

This session will be run by a Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist and will incorporate education and management techniques for :

  • Bladder problems
  • Bowel problems
  • Prolapses
  • Hormonal changes / menopause / painful sex

There is no expectation of attendees to share information on their symptoms, but questions are always welcome. We find that a significant proportion of women find their symptoms improve with the advice given.

Following attendance of this session you will be given a PIFU (patient initiated follow up) for 6 weeks. If you feel you require further intervention/management/advice, a 1:1 appointment with the Specialist Physiotherapist can be offered. This may include a vaginal examination with consent. If we do not hear from you within these 6 weeks, you will be discharged from Pelvic Health Physiotherapy.

If you do not wish to attend this group education session, this will not affect your place on the waiting list.

If you require any further information on this session or to book, please call 01535 293657.

Please note our admin hours are Tues – Thurs, 7.30am – 3pm. If you are unable to contact us in these hours, please leave a voicemail (this is checked daily). Please leave your name, date of birth and reason for call. We will endeavour to call you back quickly; however this may not be on the same day.

At your first appointment the physiotherapist will carry out a detailed assessment, including when and how your symptoms started.   Sometimes talking about your pelvic health can feel daunting, a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist is sensitive to this and will do their upmost to put you at ease.  Assessments are carried out in a private area so any discussions cannot be overheard and are totally confidential.

With pregnancy related pelvic pain symptoms, you will initially be offered a small group session.  If you would prefer a one-to-one appointment you may have to wait longer to be seen.

For pelvic floor muscle symptoms, you may be asked if you are happy to undergo a vaginal or rectal examination, so that the physiotherapist can assess your pelvic floor muscles and check their strength, coordination, and function. You may ask for a chaperone and/or a translator.

You may prefer not to have an examination there and then but to have time to think before you give your decision and that is absolutely fine. You may prefer not to have an examination at all, and you have the right to decline and does not mean you will not be offered treatment if the physiotherapist feels it will help you.

When an assessment has been completed the therapist will discuss their findings with you and the options available so that together you can plan the most appropriate treatment plan.
